Another of my favorite cars is the Austin Mini. I raced one on ice for four years and did really well. I switched to Corvairs, and then to Rabbits because the Mini engines got too expensive to build. The Mini is another car that was years ahead of its time. Virtually every front wheel drive, transverse engine, modern car is a descendent of the Mini. When it came out in 1959, it was revolutionary. It also killed the British motorcycle industry. Before the Mini, Mum and Dad would ride on the bike and the kids would be in the sidecar. A Mini was about the same price as a bike and sidecar, and was a hell of a lot more comfortable in the winter. The Victoria Mini Club had a car show at Cadboro Bay Gyro park on Sunday August 11, 2002. I took a few pictures. |
